interesting little nuggets…

While we often associate smoothies with modern wellness trends and high-end juice bars, their history is a fascinating blend of ancient traditions and 20th-century innovation. From "fruit slushes" in South America to the global franchises of 2026, the smoothie's journey is as rich as its texture.

Long before the electric blender, ancient civilizations like the Mayans and Aztecs were experimenting with drinkable fruit pastes made from crushed fruit and honey. In Brazil, a traditional "fruit slush" made from pureed tropical fruit provided the conceptual foundation for what would later become the American smoothie.

The modern smoothie as we know it wasn't possible without two key inventions in the 1920’s and 30’s : the home refrigerator and the electric blender.

  • In 1922, Stephen Poplawski invented the first blender, originally intended for making malted milkshakes.

  • In 1926: Julius Freed, searching for a way to make orange juice less acidic for his sensitive stomach, created a frothy, blended orange drink. This led to the birth of Orange Julius, one of the first "smoothie-style" retail outlets.

In the 1960s, the "smoothie" name emerged from the counterculture and macrobiotic vegetarian movements.

In 1970, a lactose-intolerant teenager named Steven Kuhnau began blending fresh fruit, ice, and nutrients as a milkshake alternative. Kuhnau didn't invent the word "smoothie"—he noted that he first heard it used by "hippies" to describe fruit drinks—but he was the first to brand it.

By the 1980s and 90s, smoothies transitioned from niche health food stores to a mainstream lifestyle staple. Today, in 2026, the smoothie has evolved into a highly customizable nutritional tool, incorporating everything from kale and spirulina to high-tech protein powders, continuing a century-long legacy of health-conscious innovation.  Come on by and try one today!
