What is Açaí?

Açaí (pronounced ah-sigh-EE) is a small, dark purple, inch-long berry that grows on the acai palm tree in the Amazon rainforest. Açaí is technically a drupe because it contains pits like olives and apricots. It has a taste that some describe as earthy with hints of pomegranate and raspberry, while others say it tastes like a cross between blackberry and dark chocolate.

Açaí is known for its high nutritional value and is packed with antioxidants, fiber, and heart-healthy fats. It also contains high levels of essential minerals, especially manganese. Açaí berries are available dried, frozen, as juice, as powder, and in other forms.

Açaí is relatively new to North American and European markets, but Indigenous tribes of the Amazon region have eaten it for centuries. Açaí berries contain antioxidants that may help boost heart health, improve memory, and protect against cancer.

Here at Berries & Bowls, we use only the best organic acai you can find on the market. It is shipped frozen, straight from the source in the Amazon jungle. There are no additives, preservatives, fillers or sweeteners added to the berries. We then take the natural berries and blend them with sweet bananas to give it a creamy texture and a touch of sweetness. Açaí berries by themselves are not sweet. They actually taste a little bitter and earthy.

We prefer to offer our customers the healthiest version of the berries so you can take advantage of all of the natural goodness they offer. If you like things on the sweeter side, we suggest you try our Spirulina, Pitaya, coconut or Jackfruit or kale bases. Again, no added sugar of junk in these bases either but they are made with sweeter fruits like mango and pineapple.

No matter which base you try or bowl combo you choose, be assured that all of our ingredients are fresh and natural. And if fruit smoothie bowls are not your thing, take a look and our other offerings including fresh pressed juices, smoothies, chia pudding and toasts!

We hope you’ll visit us in Gaithersburg (Kentland’s Market Square) of Bethesda (Bethesda Row) soon. Acauilater!
